Wild grapes vine around trees, sending their curling tendrils out to find - and cling to - twigs and branches. They are so common that sometimes I forget about them... until the cold, gray days of winter fall upon us. By this time they are shriveled and dried out, raisins clinging to the vines. Treats for cardinals and juncos, blue jays and sparrows, titmice and woodpeckers and hungry squirrels. There are no thorns, just tasty fruits on these vines.
This week, put out a dish with some cut-up bits of fruit and see which birds visit. Here's some things birds love:
- apples
- oranges
- cherries
- raisins
- cranberries
- pumpkin
Or if you don't have a place to put a plate, string the bits of fruit on some thread and hang them on a tree or bush. Then write down - or take photos of - the birds that visit your fruit plate.
I haven’t tried cranberries, but I will soon. That might be the one fruit the squirrels don’t find and filch first. The birds don’t have a chance!
