Wild Outdoor Wednesday

Revisit your square this week.

Do you notice any changes?
Are different flowers blooming?
Different critters munching leaves?

Write down what you see; draw pictures; capture the colors of July in your square.

Remember to take your sketchbook or journal with unlined pages, something to draw and write with, and something to add color ~ watercolors, colored pencils, crayons, or markers.

Fireflies!

A couple weeks ago I was backing up files to my external hard drive. I turned off the light and noticed the hard drive was blinking every now and then - a blue-green flash of light.

Over on the window, a firefly answered with it's own flashing code.

So this week, let's head outside after dark to watch the fireflies. Try to capture their colors and  flash patterns as they zip through the sky.

You can get involved with citizen science projects at Firefly Watch or if  you live in Utah and the western US, check out this Firefly Citizen Science Project.

Spend the Summer being a Curious Naturalist

Archimedes Notebook is taking a break from blogging for a few weeks so I can spend this summer being a curious naturalist.

I invite you to put a pagemarker in your books and turn off the computer for a few hours each day and head out to see what's going on outside. Take your notebook, camera, magnifying lens, bug net, or paints along so you can "take notes".

Keep tuning in on Wild Outdoor Wednesdays for five-minute field trips. Friday blogs will resume in August. Meanwhile, check over at Sally's Bookshelf for reviews of fun summer reading and an armload of neat, new biographies.
