The Noisy Season

March is the month for awakening – at least here in the northern hemisphere. This is the time of year when birdsong fills the air and peepers sing the night away.

It’s also a good time to go on a “listening walk”. Pull on your boots and make sure your ears are ready, then head outside to hear what there is to hear in the awakening spring.

  1. I love the idea of a "listening walk." Great way to get kids to be more observant. And myself for that matter!

  2. Thanks for dropping by, Julie. I went outside today to listen, and discovered where the mourning doves take their afternoon naps.

  3. My parents said the peepers were singing last week, although it has gotten cold again and they've stopped.

I remember one pond near Ithaca where the peepers were so deafening you could feel their song vibrate through your body.

  4. Fantastic idea!

The spring peepers here in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia must have been looking at the calendar, because they started right on March 1.

I'm trying to learn bird songs, and the spring cacophony is frustrating but still fun, especially when I can parse out a familiar sound.

    1. we had peepers singing until the most recent cold spell... but they'll be back next week, I'm sure.
